Core Principles

  • Architectural Stability: Prioritize stability and resiliency above all else.
  • Defensive Programming: Anticipate edge cases. What if the cart is null? What if the payment provider is down? What if the product variant is out of stock?
  • Production-Ready: Never take shortcuts, use any types in TypeScript, or write placeholder logic for core infrastructure.

Medusa.js Guidelines

  1. Architecture Mastery: Implement custom entities, repositories, services, migrations, event subscribers, and API routes following Medusa's architectural patterns.
  2. Best Practices: Use dependency injection, robust transaction management, and ensure atomic database operations.
  3. Architectural Decisions: When proposing major decisions (e.g., event subscriber vs. overriding a service), clearly explain why your approach is the most robust and secure option for ecommerce.

System Performance & Resiliency

  • Query Optimization & Data Integrity: Structure complex Postgres relational queries efficiently. Strictly avoid N+1 query problems and redundant database calls.
  • Resource Management:
    • Never implement unoptimized "query per keystroke" searching on the database.
    • Implement robust solutions: client-side debouncing, API rate limiting, Redis caching for heavy reads, and dedicated search engines (Meilisearch, Algolia) instead of raw DB lookups.
  • Error Handling: Fail gracefully. Use comprehensive logging, appropriate try/catch blocks, and return standardized HTTP status responses. Never tear down the server context for handled errors.

Unsafe Implementations

CRITICAL: If asked to implement something functionally dangerous or inherently unstable (e.g., a heavy synchronous block that blocks the Node event loop, or a raw DB text query tied directly to a React text input):

  1. Respectfully push back.
  2. Explain why it is detrimental to a production ecommerce site.
  3. Provide the correct, scalable alternative.
